A few weeks ago, I attended the “swearing in” of Mr. Arthur Boykin as the first African-American mayor of Humboldt, TN – my hometown. I love Humboldt and I felt it appropriate to witness this event first-hand. The occasion was filled with energy and anticipation. I arrived at the Humboldt Hospital Conference Center about 20 minutes early and the room was already almost completely full. I said hello to a few people that I knew as I wandered through the crowd to the back of the room so I could see the ceremony in its fullest. On this day, the new group of city aldermen were also sworn in to do their duties, representing the different districts within the city. I knew some of them but will need to meet the rest in due time.
As a native-born citizen of Humboldt, I have witnessed a lot of change over the years. My dad was a policeman here for 35 years and retired as a captain. Ralph Nicholas was his name. He was proud to serve the city for all those years and tried to – as best as he could – stay out of politics. Maybe that is the reason he was able to have such a long, distinguished career? I think so. Additionally, I served on the utility board for eight years a long time ago. I was also a member of our local Lions Club for several years before I got involved more heavily in Christian ministry. I currently serve the children of Humboldt Boys & Girls Club through the ministry of CEF of Greater Jackson and I have done singular events in cooperation with Dr. Daryll Coleman and Lane Chapel CME Church. I do not say these things to “toot my own horn,” rather to simply bring context to my position here in the city.
The inauguration was a splendid event and Dr. Coleman was the Master of Ceremonies. During the course of the afternoon, Mr. Donald Baskerville sang a lovely song that set the stage for the remainder of this historic event. I have known the Baskerville family from afar for many years but this was my first occasion to hear Donald sing. He did an awesome job!
When the judge swore in Mayor Boykin, I was impressed at the sight of his wife pinning on what I assume was an official pin to distinguish his service as mayor. It was good to see them in that moment, as a couple, taking on a major leadership role in our city. I pray that they stay strong in their marriage and faith in the days ahead. I only say that because I am sure that there will be many stressors ahead as he settles in to lead our city… as he said, for all people in our community. I appreciate and admire that public stance and I will be praying that God will give him wisdom from on high to lead.
Below are pictures that I took, for the most part. I did “borrow” three from the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. I did that only because I happened to be in the images and I borrowed the poster used to advertise the inauguration. All these photos were taken in a public space and, in my view, does not dispairarage anyone in them. Oh, as I wrap this article up, it is proper to mention that many many years ago, I was blessed to have Thomas Boykin as a teacher way back in junior high school here in Humboldt. If memory serves me, he was my biology teacher. Later on, most people would remember him as Coach Boykin as he served in Humboldt City Schools for many years in various capacities, including as a basketball coach. I feel sure that Thomas was smiling down from heaven while his brother was being sworn in as our new mayor. God bless you all and God bless Humboldt, TN.
